MINI REFIT OF A SAILING YACHT

Berthon Spain were delighted to undertake a mini-refit of a sailing yacht, this time a Gunfleet 58. Our brief was to bring the boat back to showroom condition.

THE PERFECT MATCH

The owner of this boat by his own admission is a perfectionist so he had found his perfect match with Berthon Spain.

Interior

FROM DRAWINGS TO REALISATION

The owner had a lot of interesting ideas on how to improve the boat so we made up a lot of CAD drawings for him and were then able to realise his dreams by making and fitting all of the things he asked of us.

SERVICING OF THE WINCHES, WINDLASS, ENGINE & GENERATOR

The Harken winches and Lewmar windlass had all seen a lot of sea time and so were given a thoroughly detailed service and in some cases rebuilt. We also serviced the Volvo engine and Onan generator, two regular brands that we work on.

REMAKING OF THE INTERIOR PANELS

The interior panels on this yacht had become tired and were letting down the look of the boat. After talking it through with the owner we went about removing all the panels and remaking them like new.

CARPENTRY WORK DONE IN-HOUSE

Berthon Spain did all the carpentry work in house and Revival Yachts re-covered the panels before we refitted them.

What makes a good refit…? An owner with a dream, a good contractor and a man obsessed with details running the show!

Exterior

A FIVE-PAGE JOB LIST

We had a five-page complex job list from the owner which required coordination between our team and various subcontractors.

REMOVING THE HYDRAULIC CENTRE BOARD

One of the more interesting jobs was removing the hydraulic centre board to service all the associated equipment, at 1.8m this is no small feat!

New waterline stripe.
Hull polished, anti-fouled and gel repairs made.
New Gunfleet 58 sign installed.
Custom made handle made and fitted on the bathing platform to allow guests to get out of the water with ease.
Custom made rack for the boat hooks.
Stern thruster fixed and serviced.
Bow thruster serviced.
Centre board all serviced and anti-fouled.
Propeller serviced and painted.
Cutlass bearings replaced.

SMILING FACES

The owner hadn’t seen his yacht for a few months. When we handed it back, it had been completely transformed. Seeing his surprised and happy reaction, put a smile on our faces!

GUARDIENNAGE

The owner and his family have been regularly using the boat since early March and are now in the safe hands of Berthon Spains guardiennage team.

In order to undertake a good refit you need to be meticulously organised, a skill I’m lucky to have inherited from my father, a man who works out what he’s going to wear for the rest of the year on January 1st.

Once the refit begins, and the plates start spinning, as the conductor of the orchestra you must make sure every job is interlinked and delivered on time.

In our experience it’s often the little things that are missed, a supplier sending a pot of varnish late or a shaft seal that arrives and is faulty, both things that have happened recently to us. Delivering this very difficult project on time and to our usual high standards was something myself and my team we’re very proud of.
